The 11th School International Chess Event 2024/25 is starting soon

with the participation of 5 schools from … Cuba, Greece and Poland

Brief history:

Initial idea to organize friendly match between schools was raised by teachers Nikos Rokopanos (GRE) and Jan Wiech (POL) in 2014, which has been continued in the following years in a larger cast and in the form of a team event.

11th School International Chess Event 2024/25

The Polish Correspondence Chess Commission of the Polish Chess Federation is organizing this tournament.

The event regulations were placed at the organizer website here. They were sent to all national delegates and placed also at the ICCF website.

The main purpose is to integrate school children within common passion chess.

This is the 11th School International Chess Event 2024/25 played on the ICCF server from 20.10.2024 to 31.05.2025 at 4 boards (teacher+3 students under 19).

The event is unrated. Time control – an incremental rate of play (initial time: 20 days per game plus increment: 1 move in 3 days with duplication after 20 days; 10 days leave per calendar year, no special leave). Unfinished games will be adjudicated.

This time participants are teams from 5 following schools:

The school tournament will be launched on 07.10.2024, the first moves can be made with the official start date of 20.10.2024.

1.Proyecto Super Cuba, Havana (Cuba)

Cuban team from Proyecto Super Cuba, Havana

The young people are students of Pre-university, that is, the last level before studying at the University, from different schools in the municipalities of Alamar, La Lisa and Artemisa. And precisely because there is no special school for young chess players, they are given facilities from this Super Cuba project to better help them in their future chess preparation.

The team are all 16-18 years old.

Cuban team is led by Noel Hernandez Fernandez.

He is an Electrical Engineer, he is voluntarily integrated into this Super Cuba project as a member of the FECAP and was given this task, contributing and advising on all topics from the use of computer technologies applied to chess and also the experiences at the ICCF.

Within the work group, he is in charge of training and strengthening the Cuban youth who need it.

In addition, he is currently Aliett Valdes Boza’s personal trainer, and collaborator and advisor on various topics for the rest of the team through non-face-to-face means (telephone).

2.Szkoła Podstawowa nr 1, Tomaszów Lubelski (Poland)

Primary School No. 1 in Tomaszów Lubelski was founded in 1999 after school system reform as Junior High School No. 1 and in 2017, after next school system reform, was transformed to primary school. Headmaster is Witold Pitura. More can be found at the school page.

The school is running sport club LUKS „Tomasovia” Tomaszów Lubelski, including chess section. Member of chess section are mostly school students.

The team are all 14 years old. Polish team is led by Ryszard Probola, IT and chess teacher.

3.Liceum Ogólnokształcące nr 1, Brodnica (Poland)

The Philomats of Michałowska’s Land High School in Brodnica was founded in 1873. It is one of the oldest schools in Poland. It has a rich history and its contribution to the development of Polishness in the Prussian territories. The school now boasts many scientific and sporting achievements. The chess section has existed for 10 years and has reached the medal positions in team and individual competitions in the Brodnica district.

The team are all 14-17 years old. Polish team from Brodnica is led by Marcin Kołodziejski, IT/Maths teacher and chess instructor.

4.Zespół Szkół Technicznych, Ustroń (Poland)

Polish team from Technical School Complex, Ustroń

 

Ustroń is a city in southern Poland, in the Silesian Voivodeship, in the Cieszyn poviat, a health resort, a holiday and recreational center. There are 3 larger ski centers in Ustroń, each with at least one chairlift.

The Technical School Complex (Zespół Szkół Technicznych), located in Ustroń, is a complex of a vocational school and a technical college. The professions of IT Technician, Programmer and Mechanic are taught at the school.

Adam Małysz, the most famous Polish ski jumper, graduated from this school, where he learned a profession (specialisation: tinsmith-roofer).

The team are all 17-18 years old. Polish team from Ustroń is led by student and school activist Yevheniia Bobrova under supervision of Marek Sikora. Mr. Sikora teaches vocational subjects for the profession of Mechanic Technician, IT Technician, and in the past he also taught mathematics. He is also the leader of the school chess club.

5.Lyceum, Karlovassi, Samos (Greece)

Karlovassi is the second largest city on the island of Samos, the land of the famous philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras. This year, the Samian chess team consists of students from Lyceum of Karlovassi. Their ages range from 15-18 years and it is the eleventh time that Samian chess is taking part in this chess event for schools.

Greek team captain is Nikos Rokopanos, Math teacher at the Lyceum of Karlovassi, who runs together with the school principal Vassilis Xerchogiannopoulos (also a chess player) the school’s chess club Jose Raul Capablanca. Samos Chess Club Melissos supports the school chess program.
