GM Olexandr Bubir (1957-2024)

The Correspondence Chess Federation of Ukraine sadly announces the passing of the International Grandmaster Olexandr Bubir (20.08.1957 – 22.05.2024)

At his best in the 2009/10 season, Alex achieved a rating of over 2600, winning many strong events such as the Jubilee AJEC-70. His successes were based on a strong will of character and a deep professional interest in both chess and programming (he worked on modern programmable lathes). His leadership skills helped the Ukrainian team, which he led as captain, qualify for the finals of the 17th and 21st ICCF Olympic Games and compete for medals.

Alex was proud of his family, one of his sons Sergei Bubir is also a strong grandmaster. Alex was a true patriot of Ukraine. Unfortunately, the last years of his life brought sadness due to a long illness, which he fought bravely and persistently, and constant rocket attacks on his hometown of Kryvyi Rih. Rest in peace, Alex.
