Slovenian correspondence chess players sadly announce the passing of the great chess legend IM Janko Bohak. Janko Bohak was one of the pioneers of correspondence chess in Slovenia, our long-time president, and the ICCF delegate. He was among the founders of the Slovenian Correspondence Chess Council and played a crucial role in Slovenia’s acceptance into the international organization ICCF shortly after our country’s independence.

Janko Bohak became an International Master back in 1983. He was a member of various committees and working groups at ICCF. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Bertl von Massow Silver Award in 2003 and the Bertl von Massow Gold Award in 2008.

Janko Bohak was a versatile chess player and organizer, active in his club and the Chess Federation of Slovenia. He achieved significant success as a recognized and esteemed international FIDE arbiter. He served as an arbiter in eight FIDE Chess Olympiads and was among the main arbiters at the FIDE Olympiad in Bled in 2002.
