ICCF World Cup 4 (1977-1989)

The 4th ICCF World Cup was organised by ASIGC (Italy), especially by its first president, Armando Silli, to mark its 25th anniversary.

On September 1st, 1977 the Preliminaries started (32 groups with a total of 3289 players from 58 countries). In each group there were 102 players; each of them played 10 games against the opponents who had a start-number which was 1-7-17-21-33 higher or lower than his own start-number (Example: player N° 1500 had white against N° 1501, 1507, 1517, 1521 and 1533; he had black against N° 1499, 1493, 1483, 1479 and 1467). It was the so-called “Silli formula”. About 20% of the players were admitted to the 6 Semifinal groups, which started on January 1, 1981.

The Final started on January 1, 1984, with 112 players from 16 countries. TD was International Arbiter Gian-Maria Tani (ITA). The tournament ended on November 30, 1989.
