Witold Bielecki Memorial – initial information

The idea to organize this event came to my mind just after taking over by me ICCF delegate for Poland duties from my predecessor and friend Józef Lubas. Initial information was presented to the ICCF Congress 2010 in Antalya, Turkey and included in the minutes.

From ICCF Congress 2010 minutes (page 45):

Witold Bielecki Memorial (POL)

The Polish Federation announced initial information, which will start early 2012. This event will be presented at the 2011 for consideration and approval.

Until next ICCF Congress 2011 in Helsinki, Finland, talks with national delegates were conducted to invite players. It was not easy to gather top players in one tournament. Few players kindly refused. The main reason was that few of them wanted to take a rest from correspondence chess, permanent withdrawal or for a short time called “coffe break” 🙂 Other reason was short of time, because of extensive duty obligations or other tournament commitments. Fortunately, Caissa was favorable to us and we managed to gather very good representation from the top. This is very rare situation for players to compete in so strong events at category 16 or higher.

At the ICCF Congress 2011 this event was officialy accepted and included in the minutes.

From ICCF Congress 2011 minutes (page 55):

Witold Bielecki Memorial (POL)

  • Section B 13-15 players, Cat. XII – XIV,

Start dates: 03.01.2012 Prize fund: To be decided TD: To be decided TO: Mariusz Wojnar

Finally sections were fixed in January 2012 as following:

  • section B: Bravo section, cat.12, 13 players

ICCF Diamond Jubilee Webserwer World Cup 18 – status of the entries

Please see below for the latest registration and status update

The announcement of the ICCF Diamond Jubilee Webserwer World Cup 18 in memory of Witold Bielecki with all the details you can find here.

Poland was involved as a tournament organizer in previous three World Cups (3rd, 6th and 7th) which covered 6,222 entries. The main effort (as TO and TD) was laid down by our friend Witold Bielecki (1947-2008), who died unexpectedly in 2008. He was the chairman of the Polish CC Federation and Polish delegate to ICCF, also cc player and ICCF official, IM since 1996 and IA since 1978, member and chairman of several ICCF working groups and committees/ commissions.

Usually World Cups are the biggest tournaments in the world and attract many players, including titled one, thus making the possibility of norms more likely in semifinals and final. An amazing achievement was performed by German player, Reinhard Moll, who preveiled 4 editions of the World Cup (11, 12, 13 and 14). It is hardly possible to improve this outcome. But let’s try!

In two weeks of registration (till 2011-05-15 17:13), we have 44 qualified entries from 16 countries, including 3 titled players (2xSM, 1xIM), with the highest rating 2508.

All players are invited to apply, newcomers to ICCF and experienced players as well. Players may enter in the usual way through their National Federations (NF) or, where eligible, via the ICCF Direct Entry system. Entry fee is a regular one for a world cup (http://www.iccf-webchess.com/Message.aspx?message=336) and depends on NF (if applied through NF).

Please note the excellent prizes available in this tournament (prize 2000€ for the first 4 players – 1000€; 600€, 300€; 100€). In addition to that, there are special qualifications for a World Championship, because of ICCF Diamond Jubilee, much more beneficial than usual.

Detailed report on the entries you can find here. It will be published every two weeks (more or less).
