There are must-see locations in all districts. The Mediaeval and Renaissance buildings of the Old Town, the Jewish Kazimierz district, Stare Podg\u00f3rze are just some of the great places in Krak\u00f3w. Lovers of modern history should find their way to Nowa Huta \u2013 an urban pearl of Socialist realism architecture. Krak\u00f3w is also a city of churches \u2013 there are over 120, including many ancient buildings. Of course there are also hiking and cycling routes, cruises along the Vistula, and even a real beach \u2013 plenty of choice for everyone!<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Historic monuments<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4>Wawel<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wawel\">Wawel<\/a> is an architectural complex erected over many centuries atop a limestone outcrop on the left bank of the Vistula River in Krak\u00f3w, Poland, at an altitude of 228 metres above the sea level. It is a place of great significance to the Polish people as up until 1611 it was a formal residence of Polish Kings. It is because Cracow was the capital city of Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and later The Polish\u2013Lithuanian Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Castle with an armoury and the Cathedral are situated on the Wawel hill from which the castle took its name. Polish Royalty and many distinguished Poles are interred in the Wawel Cathedral where Royal coronations were conducted. Some of the oldest masonary parts of Wawel, such as the Serene Virgin Mary Rotunda dates back to 970. There are also some wooden parts of the complex that date over century earlier to about IX century.<\/p>\n<h4>Krak\u00f3w Barbican<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Krak%C3%B3w_barbican\">The Krak\u00f3w barbican<\/a> (Polish: barbakan krakowski) is a barbican \u2013 a fortified outpost once connected to the city walls. It is a historic gateway leading into the Old Town of Krak\u00f3w, Poland. The barbican is one of the few remaining relics of the complex network of fortifications and defensive barriers that once encircled the royal city of Krak\u00f3w in the south of Poland. It currently serves as a tourist attraction and venue for a variety of exhibitions.<\/p>\n<h4>Rynek G\u0142\u00f3wny (Main Market Square)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Square,_Krak%C3%B3w\">The Main Square<\/a> (Polish: Rynek G\u0142\u00f3wny w Krakowie) is the main market square of the Old Town in Krak\u00f3w, Poland and a principal urban space located at the center of the city. It dates back to the 13th century, and \u2013 at roughly 40,000 m\u00b2 \u2013 it is the largest medieval town square in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Rynek G\u0142\u00f3wny is a spacious square surrounded by historical townhouses (kamienice), palaces and churches. The center of the square is dominated by the Sukiennice (the Cloth Hall or Drapers&#8217; Hall), rebuilt in 1555 in the Renaissance style, topped by a beautiful attic or Polish parapet decorated with carved masks. On one side of the Sukiennice is the Town Hall Tower (Wie\u017ca ratuszowa), on the other the 10th century Church of St. Wojciech (St. Adalbert&#8217;s) and 1898 Adam Mickiewicz Monument. Rising above the square are the Gothic towers of St. Mary&#8217;s Basilica (Ko\u015bci\u00f3\u0142 Mariacki).<\/p>\n<h4>Kazimierz (Jewish District)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kazimierz\">Kazimierz<\/a> &#8211; a historical district of Krak\u00f3w or Jewish District &#8211; was for a long time an independent town with its own municipal charter and laws. Best known for being home to a significant Jewish community from the 14th century on until the Holocaust in the Second World War.<\/p>\n<h4>Botanical Garden in Krak\u00f3w<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ogrod.uj.edu.pl\/?lang=en\">The Botanic Garden of the Jagiellonian University<\/a> is a botanical garden, founded in 1783 in Krak\u00f3w. It is located east of the Old Town and occupies 9.6 hectares. It belongs to the Jagiellonian University and is classified as a historical location.<\/p>\n<h4>Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum<\/h4>\n<p>The Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp complex, established by German Nazis in 1940, one of the most infamous sites in Europe, saw the deaths of nearly 1.5 million people, most of whom were European Jews.<\/p>\n<h4>Wieliczka Salt Mine<\/h4>\n<p>The mine, built in the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world\u2019s oldest salt mines still in operation. From its beginning and throughout its existence, the Royal mine was run by the \u017bupy krakowskie Salt Mines, believed to be the world\u2019s 14th-oldest company. Commercial mining was discontinued in 1996 due to low salt prices and mine flooding.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Active leisure<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4>Aquapark in Krakow<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parkwodny.pl\/en\">Aquapark in Krakow<\/a> is one of the greatest aquaparks in Europe. An impressive playground will doubtless attract children\u2019s attention. The beach is also an excellent place for companies \u2013 the restaurant organises conferences and business training courses.
